Castello della Sala
Castello della Sala is located in Umbria, not far from the Tuscany, some 18 km from the historical city of Orvieto. The Castello is a magnificent mediaeval castle dating back to 1350, surrounded by 500 hectares of land, of which 170 hectares are under vines.
This area with limestone and clay soils, rich in shellfish fossils, is particularly suited to white grapes. The altitude is between 220 and 470 metres, so the vines enjoy a lot of sunshine in the morning. Beside the local procanico and grechetto, the estate is planted with chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, sémillon, pinot blanc, viognier and even a little traminer and riesling. There is also some pinot noir.
The high thermal range between day and night helps the grapes to mature well and preserve their acidity.
Cervaro della Sala is one this estate’s best known cuvées; this wine was created by chief oenologist Renzo Cotarella. After a process of trial and error, the first vintage was launched on the market in 1985. It was one of the first Italian wines to do its malolactic fermentation and to be aged in French oak barrels. It has a great ageing potential.
Castello della Sala is a great terroir wine, well recognized internationally, an impressive and classy wine, as is so customary at Antinori.
