Tenuta Tignanello
The Tignanello estate lies in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, near San Casciano in Val di Pesa. This is where the internationally acclaimed Tignanello and Solaia are made. The estate extends over 319 hectares of land, of which 130 hectares are under vines.
Tignanello and Solaia come from the same hill, at an altitude of 350 to 400 metres, cabernet sauvignon being planted with a more southern orientation than sangiovese. The marl soils of the Pliocene epoch are rich in limestone and schist. This is a unique vineyard. Everything is in balance – thanks to the altitude, it enjoys a cool breeze and the thermal range between day and night allows the acidity to develop in the berries. As a result, the wines are always perfectly ripe, rich but also very refined, with a very soft tannic structure and a delicate acidity that makes them more dynamic. And they have a very good ageing potential.
These tow “Super Tuscans”, as they are called, are amongst the most influential wines in the history of the Italian viticulture. Marquess Piero Antinori created Tignanello in 1971 and Solaia some years later. Tignanello is mainly sangiovese, supplemented with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Solaia, on the opposite, is mainly cabernet sauvignon, supplemented with de sangiovese and cabernet franc.
These two wines are world famous and are now collectors’ items. But more to the point, they are great, drinkable and enjoyable wines, very well-balanced and with a big personality. Sheer class.
